I lived at the corner of 122nd street and LaSalle until the time I left for California in 1968. Loved Roseland and still drive through every now and then. Went to Gompers and graduated from Mendel in 1968. Played with a band called Heartsfield for its duration and had some regional success. Still Live in the Beverly/Morgan Park area with my wife and two daughters. What a great site!! Would love to hear from anybody that remembers me.

What a great place to grow up in the 40's and 50's. places like the park, down the hill the O. Michigan Ave. Gattles, sliding down the hills in winter, the street cars, and so many other places and things that made Roselan a great place to live.

Living in Roseland(Bum Town) were enjoyable years. The Class of 1952 from St Anthony School, and we still have a reunion every 5 years. Only biggest regreat that our children didn't grow up in wonderful neighborhood like we did. We had no fears to go out and play.

Just read through all the messages posted and it brings back many memories.
Went to West Pullman, Riverdale Branch, Van Vlissingen, Curtis and (1966) Fenger.
Grew up on 117th Lowe, 133rd Prairie and 120th & Wallace. Across the street was Darvin furniture. Went to Darvin's in Orland and talked with one of the sons. He took me into his office and showed me pictures of the old store. Unreal.
Most of my relatives were also Roselandites, Martins, Vinks and Schultz's.
Miss the friends that were made, Peggy Stevenson and Vicky Dal Santo and enoy the friends that keep in touch like Bagnara and all the Adents.
Once a year, Puczki Day or Fat Tuesday, a bunch of us get together to enjoy a delicious buffet at Warsaw Inn. We always have a great time remembering what used to be and what we used to do.
Where else could you leave your door open or walk up and down 123rd street? Driving down Michigan ave, fun.
See you at the reunion.

My brother Bob and I grew up at 11130 S. Parnell. I went to Brennan "grammar" school, and Fenger High -- graduated 1959.
Used to hang out at Chris's Sweet Shop (if I recall the name correctly) at 111th and Wallace. In the summer, when Fenger was closed and the place was mostly dead, my friend Kenny Anderson and I would buy a dime Coke each, and sit in a booth reading all the comic books on the racks. But on school days when school was in session, Chris's was jumping! Packed at lunchtime and after school -- kids dancing to that dangerous new Rock 'n' Roll on the jukebox.

I could not believe this website. all the history, The pictures. This was Old home night. Born 1943 left Roseland 1954. 11401 Wallace St. Corner house. Empty lot across the alley next to Panozzo's Produce truck. One block from Fenger. Jack Delveaux kicked my Sid Luckman autographed football up into a tree. Have my pony picture. Same pony, same outfit. I played in the kit house at 115th and Parnell. Can't remember the family name. The Evan's girls on Parnell had a collie with no tail. The kids were the Schultes, Belches, Somstroms. The vacant lot was the ball diamond. Brennan school In the class, Susan Pullan, Faith Freeberg. Phillip Lund. Roseland Presbyterian Church was church home. Cousins lived on 103 rd and Prairie. Strombergs and Royers. Richard Stromberg played for Fenger football
Other family ties were the Vanderwarfs from paint store.
Walked to the State theater for the Saturday matinee's. Best ones were the ticket drawings for prizes. Hair cuts at Gatelys or the UNION barber shop. Siblings swam at the pump. Walked to the little league field at 115th and Halstead. Dad graduated from Pullman Tech.Worked at Mickleberry Sausage Co. All siblings born at Roseland Community. Grandpas worked at the Pullman shops. All Dutch family. Benschop, Vanderwarf, Van Weston.
I could not think of a better place and time to grow up. The block was our home. Alley picking was an adventure. Stealing pop bottles for refunds to buy Canfield BIG bottles was a daily chore. Church picnics at Riverdale park. Softball in the intersection of 114th and Wallace. Putting rugs over the sewer openings to keep the basements from flooding. The knife sharpener man pushing his cart down the street. Scaring the daylights out of us.Ethnic prejudice ran free by our parents. We knew who we could or could not play with. The Dutch were tight. Sister went to VV. all the rest public Kohn and Brennan
Thanx for letting me ramble. So many great memories. My suburban kids could never have the experience.

I went to Van Vlissingen (Class of 1969) and St. Willibrord (Class of 1973). I would enjoy hearing from anyone from either class. I would also like to know if anyone has organized, or attended, class reunions for either school.

Hey, I went to Scanlan School in kindergarten through 2nd grade. 1967 thru 1969. Lived down from the Normal theatre, right next to a VFW hall, across from Spillers Drug store and Jewel.(which had a big field across from Jewel) We use to play in that field as a kid. I had a good friend named Brian that lived a couple buildings away on the corner , across from that field, he had a sister named Kathy. I also had a buddy named Jimmy that lived behind me across the alley. Two other good friends I remember from my childhood are Keith and Willard Blankinship (if the spelling on their last name is correct).
I know lots more names of people from my brother, I had a couple older brothers and a sister that went to fengar High School too. anyway,, any connections please feel free to e-mail me, I would love to hear from someone that went to school with me or remembers me. Thanks.
