I grew up in Roseland and so did my wife Jean. I lived at 12113 S. Lafayette 4 houses down from the IC tracks. My sisters and I went to Saint Louis of France Grade School, and I went to Mendel (class of 74). My sisters all went to Mother of Sorrows. I worked at Gatelys for a couple of years while in high school. I remember all of the old places on the "ave". Hung out at West Pullman park in the summer. Some of my best memories are being with pops at Toigos (sp?) Tap on 119th street across from the Normal theater. When us kids wanted to see a movie, pops would drop us off at the Normal and wait for us at Toigos. We would meet him there after the show... I am thrilled to find this wonderful site to help me trip down memory lane and relive some of the best times of my life. How I miss Giovani's pizza and Don's Drive In rootbeer malts.

Roseland was near perfect. I had the best times of my life there. My father worked at Sherwin Williams for 42 years and was great friends with Lino and Tillie C**censored**ia who owned the 580 Club at 115th and Champlain. After work sometimes, he would bring us great treats from Trio's Drive Inn across the street from there. I especially loved their Italian sausages and "Hum Dinger" milk shakes. I saw some of my favorite movies at the Roseland and the State theaters. I picked up extra pocket money delivering The Reporter, then turned around and spent it at Roseland Music or Gately's.

I am I didn't get a chance to graduate from Fenger because we had to vacate our neighborhood much to my dismay. I had so many friends that I will never see again. I am now 56 and and still have dreams of Roseland. Karl Taylor

I lived at 11414 S. Perry Avenue, was a member of St. Nicholas Parish, went to school at St. Nicholas Grammar School and later at Brennan, went shopping with my mom usually at Penney's or Gately's, went swimming at Palmer Park every summer, knew every inch of our part of Roseland like I know the layout of my own house today. My Dad worked at the little Sears store near the A&P and he also worked at International Harvester. I'm 52 now, and we've all been gone from Roseland - my whole family - since the early 1970's, but I swear that not a week goes by that I don't think of that place and how wonderful it was growing up there. In today's world, it almost seems impossible that such a thing could ever have existed, but it did, and it lives on, apparently, in a few more hearts as well. God bless all my fellow members of the Roseland diaspora, all of us like wandering Jews after the fall of Jerusalem, wanting so much return but not daring to because of the pain it would cause. Long live the memories of Hardrock, Coco, and Joe, Garfield Goose, Family Classics and Frazier Thomas, and Suzy Snowflake too.
