What a great place the Roseland area was to grow up! There will never be another place like Roseland. What great people lived and work there.

I grew up in Roseland and so did my wife Jean. I lived at 12113 S. Lafayette 4 houses down from the IC tracks. My sisters and I went to Saint Louis of France Grade School, and I went to Mendel (class of 74). My sisters all went to Mother of Sorrows. I worked at Gatelys for a couple of years while in high school. I remember all of the old places on the "ave". Hung out at West Pullman park in the summer. Some of my best memories are being with pops at Toigos (sp?) Tap on 119th street across from the Normal theater. When us kids wanted to see a movie, pops would drop us off at the Normal and wait for us at Toigos. We would meet him there after the show... I am thrilled to find this wonderful site to help me trip down memory lane and relive some of the best times of my life. How I miss Giovani's pizza and Don's Drive In rootbeer malts.

Roseland was near perfect. I had the best times of my life there. My father worked at Sherwin Williams for 42 years and was great friends with Lino and Tillie C**censored**ia who owned the 580 Club at 115th and Champlain. After work sometimes, he would bring us great treats from Trio's Drive Inn across the street from there. I especially loved their Italian sausages and "Hum Dinger" milk shakes. I saw some of my favorite movies at the Roseland and the State theaters. I picked up extra pocket money delivering The Reporter, then turned around and spent it at Roseland Music or Gately's.
I am I didn't get a chance to graduate from Fenger because we had to vacate our neighborhood much to my dismay. I had so many friends that I will never see again. I am now 56 and and still have dreams of Roseland. Karl Taylor

I lived at 10740 S. Calumet from 1953-1962 and attended school at Zion Lutheran. My mom graduated from Fenger in 1949. This site brought back great memories of Gatelys, Ziggys, Pesaventos. Still trying to remember the name of the corner store near where we lived. Used to get a bag full of candy for a quarter!

Our lives were so entangled in the neighborhoods, schools, and businesses that were are childhood. The greatest strip mall ever was the Ave.How many of us shared a order of fries at Woolworth's.Or the smell of Gately's bakery.Gym classes at Palmer Park,or watching Walt Disney's Dumbo in the old St. Anthony"s Church. So many memories,we all share by a close knit community known as Roseland.

Great times! Many wonderful memories. I attended St. Anthony's
and graduated 1965. I moved on to Mendel High School graduated in 1969. My Uncle owned "Richards" florist. I retired a few years ago from a long career in Law Enforcement. The pictures and names bring a warm feeling. I am glad I still have my special thoughts about a community filled with hard working,
friendly folks.

I lived in Roseland until I was twelve years old. On 118th. Went to St. Louis Of France grade school. It was really hard to leave. I still drive by our old house and am thrilled to see it's there. Nice to see so many people feel the same way I do and really miss the old neighborhood. There is one thing for sure. Nothing stays the same.

I was born on the east side of Chicago at 103rd and ave M . In 1958 my parents moved to 125th and michigan. I went to Gompers elementry school for K thru 12, then Fenger High School where I graduated in January 1966 . Believe it or not I have all of my class photos from K to graduation. I loved the Roseland area and probably walked every street in the area . This site brings back all the memories that I lived , so keep up the great work . Thanks Julius

We (Dad, mom, five sisters and me) lived on 108th Place and all 6 of us atteneded Van Vlissingen. I drove through the "HOOD" on the 7th of this month. Alot has changed, but the old memories were sparked. I would never trade the childhood memories, nor could I imagine being raised anywhere else! It is and always will be a part of all of us! God Bless.

Went to Holy Rosary Irish and then to St. Louis Academy (1959) We were the last High School class to graduate and just had our 50th reunion. My parents owned the ice cream parlor (Kennedy's Korner) on the corner of 113th South Park. Many fond memories of living in both Pullman (11224 Forestville) and Roseland.

I lived at 11414 S. Perry Avenue, was a member of St. Nicholas Parish, went to school at St. Nicholas Grammar School and later at Brennan, went shopping with my mom usually at Penney's or Gately's, went swimming at Palmer Park every summer, knew every inch of our part of Roseland like I know the layout of my own house today. My Dad worked at the little Sears store near the A&P and he also worked at International Harvester. I'm 52 now, and we've all been gone from Roseland - my whole family - since the early 1970's, but I swear that not a week goes by that I don't think of that place and how wonderful it was growing up there. In today's world, it almost seems impossible that such a thing could ever have existed, but it did, and it lives on, apparently, in a few more hearts as well. God bless all my fellow members of the Roseland diaspora, all of us like wandering Jews after the fall of Jerusalem, wanting so much return but not daring to because of the pain it would cause. Long live the memories of Hardrock, Coco, and Joe, Garfield Goose, Family Classics and Frazier Thomas, and Suzy Snowflake too.
